Where bedroom furniture is concerned it’s not much of a secret that your bed is the be all and end all. It’s the most important item in the bedroom. And here’s an interesting fact for you, as an average, Australians head out to buy a new bed approximately every 10 years. Buying yourself a bed is important work, and there are a items that need to be ticked off before you hand over your hard earned cash, including comfort, build quality, the quality of the materials used, what warranty is included, and of course, the style.

It’s been popular for a while now, trends tending to favour Scandinavian styling with a move towards bed frames made from raw timbers. Another feature gaining fast popularity is beds with upholstered headboards.

Many of today’s bed-frame designs have a low profile, and tend to be organic in shape, or perch on slim feet. This is a reference back to the styles of the 60s and 70s, however with the latest technology playing a big role.

Here’s some quick tips on how to select the best mattress for your bed:

  • Know your budget. A top-quality mattress might be expensive but it’s a justified investment.

  • Hunt for mattresses that incorporate technology such as gel-infused viscose foam, which draws heat away from the body while you sleep.

  • The ‘right’ mattress essentially comes down to personal preference. If you are bigger or have back issues, consider firmer options.

  • Adjustable mattresses, where the head and feet sections can be lowered or raised, are a good option for people with respiratory, postural or circulatory conditions.

Bed Frame Storage

One innovation buyers can’t get enough of these days is incorporated storage. Buyers ofBEDROOM FURNITURE definitely have storage at the top of their mind these days. And manufacturers are addressing this by offering beds with drawers built into the base, along with shelving or even cabinetry, including jewellery compartments and pull-out trays, in the headboard.

Adjustable Bases

Another recent development in bed technology is adjustable bases, which allow you to lift and lower the individual head and foot positions to increase your comfort, assist your breathing and relieve pressure on your lower back. Some models even offer a massage function being controlled via a wireless remote in most cases.

Sleep Smart

The latest sleep diagnostic technology has recently been unveiled to Australian consumers, where the mattresses measure the duration of a person’s sleep, their respiration and heart rate. It then uses algorithms to measure what stages of sleep the occupant is in and for how long and feeds this information back through an app. This complements wearable technology such as Fitbits and Apple watches. Many of us think that we don’t sleep well and stress about it, when in reality we may be getting sufficient sleep. When you can measure it, you can manage it.

Measurements

Before you start looking around furniture showrooms, do your homework. Measure the maximum amount of space you’d like your bed to occupy, taking into account other pieces of furniture in the bedroom. Keep in mind a general guideline that you should allow a 1 metre clearance area around the bed. And remember that the length of your bed should ideally extend about 15cm further than the outstretched length of the tallest person who’ll be sleeping in the bed.

With these quick tips, you should now be able to go and buy the perfect bed for your needs, and get a great night’s sleep every night.
